The Kitchen Table Revolution
The Kitchen Table Revolution, a feature documentary on the women driving Scotland’s community-ownership movement – arguably the country’s most significant, and least told, social change of the past century.
The film follows four present-day buyouts: a west coast island, a Highland community rebuilding its economy, a Borders community reimaging a former estate, and an urban community protecting community space and mental health. Interviews with women who led earlier buyouts trace recurring themes – mapping assets, building trust, raising funds, negotiating with landowners, voting together and connect this history to a longer lineage of women leading Scotland’s land struggles, from the Highland Land League onward.
Testimony is delivered in Gàidhlig, Scots and English, combining archive material, oral history and new filming with an intimate, handheld visual style. Each story closes on a tangible outcome, showing stewardship as well as resistance.
The film responds directly to current pressures around land concentration, climate, and the cost of living. Produced with communities rather than about them, it will be released for both broadcast and community screenings, supported by classroom clips and a discussion guide to extend its educational reach.
We’d love to hear from any groups who would like to participate in the film.
