Announcing SCOTLANDIA
Community Land Scotland is launching SCOTLANDIA, a new podcast series exploring the relationship between people, place, and land across Scotland. It’s part of our wider Cultural Programme, funded by Creative Scotland, and it starts from a simple premise: the land carries stories, and the people who live on it are best placed to tell them.
Over the coming months we’ll be recording conversations with communities, landowners, historians, and storytellers from across the country — building a series that’s as much about listening as it is about broadcasting.
What we’re setting out to do
Scotland’s relationship with its land is contested, changing, and deeply personal. SCOTLANDIA exists to give that relationship room to breathe – moving past headlines and policy debates to the lived experience underneath them: who holds land, who’s held by it, and what gets passed down when ownership changes hands.
Each episode will centre real voices from Scotland’s communities, grounded in place rather than abstraction. We’re building the series around a simple creative idea: taking a single square metre of ground, pinned by what3words location and letting its story radiate outward, into history, ownership, memory, and the people who call it home.
The sorts of things we’ll be talking about
Expect conversations that move between the historical and the immediate, land reform and community buyouts, the everyday work of stewarding a place, the folklore and memory attached to particular landscapes, and the questions communities are asking right now about who gets a say in Scotland’s land. Some episodes will sit with a single square metre and everything it holds; others will follow a theme across the country. All of them will be rooted in specific places and the people who know them best.
