Community Land Scotland

Our Work

Community landownership is leading sustainable development across the country

Community Land Scotland was established to provide a collective voice for community landowners in Scotland.

We have over 130 member organisations across Scotland, ranging from community landowners of major crofting estates in the Western Isles to inner city community hubs in diverse communities.

Our vision is for the community ownership of land and buildings to be a significant driver of sustainable development across the whole of Scotland.

We are building a Community Land Movement where emerging and existing community landowners are supported to thrive.

We provide guidance, resources, and connections to help communities successfully navigate the road to community landownership. For established community landowners, we provide ongoing advice and support, as well as networking and peer-to-peer learning opportunities.

We share information about community ownership to new communities through roadshows, touring exhibitions, regional events, webinars and media coverage. We partner with other organisations such as Community Woodlands Association, Scottish Rural Action, Scottish Communities Alliance and the Scottish Land Fund to gather communities together to share resources and knowledge.

Through our cultural projects, we aim to help people better understand the history and impact of community ownership.

As the membership body for community landowners in Scotland, we take the experiences and challenges of our Members and funnel them into action. We raise the profile of community landowners in the press, identify common challenges being felt across the sector and tailor our services accordingly.

We influence policies affecting rural and urban communities, particularly around land reform, ecological crisis, repopulation, urban development, Community Wealth Building and empowerment, and the Just Transition to Net Zero. Our learning comes from the real life experiences of our many members.
