Castle Loch Lochmaben Community Trust was created and took ownership of the loch in 2014 when it was put up for sale. A successful Scottish Land Fund application enabled the local community to protect and continue to enjoy the 277 acre site with 90 acres of water.
Currently managed by 8 trustees and 377 members from the local area, who meet regularly to:
- Maintain paths
- Care for nature
- Organise events, and
- Help keep the area clean and safe
Projects include:
- A 3-mile circular path around the loch (suitable for most people, including some wheelchair users)
- The ruins of Lochmaben Castle
- and Various events which run throughout the year
Castle Loch is a protected nature site, home to:
- Wild geese and ducks
- Red squirrels
- Beautiful wildflowers
It’s also historically important, with castle ruins that go back to medieval times.
