Meet the Pioneers: Communities Building Wealth

Community Wealth Building – a people-centred approach to local economic development – is a priority of Scottish Government, which recently completed a consultation on a Community Wealth Building Bill to be introduced in this Parliament.

This approach, which redirects wealth back into the local economy, and places control and benefits into the hands of local people, is one that is central to the work of many community landowners. In this Meet the Pioneers webinar, we will hear from three communities who are generating community wealth by supporting local businesses and wider local economy initiatives.

  • Moray Finch from Mull and Iona Community Trust will share how they are creating facilities for businesses and building up an evidence base about the impact of a lack of affordable housing, on businesses
  • Hugh Ross and Angus Murray from Urras an Taobh Sear / Staffin Community Trust will share how the diverse projects of the trust, including their housing project, the eco-museum, and the harbour, have fed into the local economy
  • From South Cowal Community Enterprises, Linsay Chalmers will talk about how their community shop has increased its local supplier base and the other ways they are supporting the local economy
