Sanquhar is a town with a welcoming and thriving community at the heart of Upper Nithsdale. We aim to improve the social, economic, and physical quality of life for the whole community.

Sanquhar Enterprise Company received charitable status in February 2019, as a SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation). Since then, the 2022-2026 Sanquhar & District Community Action Plan was launched by Sanquhar Community Council, and a new Development Officer was employed by Sanquhar Enterprise Company.

We are considering purchasing and redeveloping Whigham’s Inn at 52 High Street with support from South of Scotland Community Housing. This former coaching inn has historical links to Robert Burns. We are also preparing a Stage 2 application to acquire old garages at Queensberry Square, as a Community Asset Transfer from Dumfries & Galloway Council. We don’t yet have a permanent base in the town but are in discussions with the local authority for a licence to occupy another vacant property on the High Street – the former library – with the ambition to acquire it as another Community Asset Transfer in the long term.

Other projects include the upgrade of core paths: previously Sanquhar Enterprise Company upgraded the popular Euchan path; and look forward to improving the River Nith – Braeheads Circular Core Path, which takes in the Southern Upland Way, as it passes through Sanquhar.
