Agnew Lane is a small street in Govanhill, Glasgow. What makes it special is the community garden there, which has become a great example of local people coming together to improve their neighbourhood.
What Happened:
In 2007 the land was purchased by it’s current owner who failed to develop the land even when planning permission was granted. The land became a dumping ground for dangerous refuse.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, a group of young people took action. They cleaned up the space and started growing vegetables for food banks.
They built the garden using recycled materials—like old windows and plastic screens from the pandemic.
What’s Happening Now:
The community is working hard to officially take ownership of the land, so they can keep it as a garden for good.
The garden now hosts events like bonfires, music nights, and meals where people can meet, share food, and enjoy nature together.
