SUMMARY:Community Land Scotland AGM and Meet the Pioneers: Celebrating Land Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Community Land Scotland’s annual general meeting will be at 10:30am on Wednesday 11 October 2023\, hosted on Zoom. All members and the general public are welcome to attend. \nFollowing the AGM\, we are pleased to host a special installment of our Meet the Pioneers series: Celebrating Land Heritage. \n \n \nCommunity landowners across Scotland act as owners and stewards to over 550\,000 acres. Cultural connection with the land is an important motivator for many buyouts. This connection only strengthens when communities buy the land where they live. In many communities\, stories\, place names and traditions relating to the landscape go back thousands of years – that sense of deep connection contributes to community wellbeing and informs thinking about the legacy they’ll leave behind for future generations. \nAs Community Land Scotland begins our celebration of A Hundred Years of Community Ownership\, we are learning from those whose work is rooted in understanding and building from land heritage. Agnes Rennie will lead a conversation with Fatima Uygun\, Mairi McFadyen and Frank Rennie that explores how communities across Scotland build their work from their histories. The conversation will draw specific examples from the Govanhill Baths\, Abriachan Forest Trust and Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn. \nFollowing the conversation\, participants can ask questions of the panelists and join the conversation. \nThis event is part of our Meet the Pioneer series which showcases the achievements of community landowners across Scotland and provides a platform for them to share their experiences and learning with others. \n

SUMMARY:Meet the Pioneers: Community Growing
DESCRIPTION:The pandemic and the climate emergency have highlighted the need to improve food security\, reduce food miles and connect people with nature. As a result\, the number of community landowners involved in food growing has rocketed in recent years. In this Meet the Pioneers webinar\, we’ll learn from two community-owned growing projects and from Social Farms and Gardens Scotland. \nComrie Development Trust runs Comrie Community Orchard and Comrie Community Allotments at its Cultybraggan Camp site – an ex- Prisoner of War Camp. The Orchard\, which is managed by volunteers\, has 40 varieties of apple along with plums\, damsons\, cherries\, quinces\, walnuts\, hazels\, fruit bushes and an edible hedge. The Comrie Allotments Association leases its 41-plot site from the Development Trust. \nThe Ridge transformed two areas of derelict land in Dunbar town centre into community growing spaces. The Backlands site is a much-loved community space that produces flowers and organic fruit and vegetables\, as well as providing a safe and inspiring place to volunteer or simply be. The space at Empire Close\, which the Ridge took on in 2020\, is currently being developed into an apothecary garden. \nSocial Farms and Gardens Scotland supports community growing\, and the development of nature-based activities and greenspace improvement across Scotland. \nFollowing presentations from the speakers\, participants will engage in a short Q&A session. \nREGISTER HERE\n  \n \nThis event is part of our Meet the Pioneer series which showcases the achievements of community landowners across Scotland and provides a platform for them to share their experiences and learning with others.

SUMMARY:Urban Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Community Land Scotland is hosting the 5th Annual Urban Gathering to bring together communities in towns or cities throughout Scotland who own\, or are interested in buying\, land or other assets. Responding to demand from our Members\, this Gathering is focused on helping groups share their story across different audiences\, allowing them to access funding opportunities\, and supporting them with succession planning. \nThe event includes both practical sessions and lots of time to meet others who are working on innovative community land projects across Scotland’s towns and cities. \nThe morning session (10:00 – 12:00): \nWhat is community ownership all about? This is our fifth Urban Gathering! Communities in towns and cities across Scotland have long been interested in owning buildings and land. In 2023\, many more communities are embarking on the community ownership journey. We will explore the context of urban community ownership now\, and how we can support continued success in the future. \nSharing your story: How can you tell your story? This session will feature presentations from three communities about their different approaches to storytelling. We will look at how these methods can deepen your impact in your community\, and help you forge new connections! \nEvidencing your social impact: a practical workshop\, exploring the nuts and bolts of techniques that can measure the impact of your work in your community. \nLunch will be provided at 12:00. \nThe afternoon workshop (13:00 – 15:00): \nThis facilitated group session will help you identify how to increase your impact by exploring whose voices are present in your decision-making and work\, and whose are missing. The workshop has been designed to increase awareness\, knowledge and skills around diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in order to empower and enable you to drive cultural change within your organisation and community. Working with other communities facing the same challenges as you\, you’ll build confidence to create an inclusive culture and develop concrete proposals for bringing that work to your communities. \nDetails and logistics \nThe event is free\, and we want to ensure anyone can attend the event. \nLet us know if you have any accessibility needs. We can pay for travel and childcare costs where those are a barrier to taking part. \nWe don’t have an official definition for ‘urban’ groups: if you want to come learn about urban community land ownership\, regardless of the size of your settlement\, please join us! \nWe start at 10:00 and end at 15:00 to allow people to travel from across Scotland. We’ll be hosting networking before for those who have a bit more time. \n  \nQuestions? \nGet in touch with Meg\, Development Officer at meg.taintor@communitylandscotland.org.uk

SUMMARY:Handling Conflict Constructively for Community Owners
DESCRIPTION:Ever feel like you are stuck in a loop when it comes to trying to resolve conflict? Well\, you are not alone. Community Land Scotland has identified this as a key challenge faced by community landowners\, so we have come together with the Scottish Community Mediation Centre to offer 12 places on their Handling Conflict Constructively course. This course will only be attended by community landowners\, so it will be a safe space to discuss some of the conflicts that can come up during and after community buyouts. \nThe main aims of the training sessions are for participants to develop: \n\nAn understanding of different sources of conflict and the different ways people deal with it;\nAn understanding of how you deal with conflict personally in different situations;\nSkills in helping people identify what they need to make conflict situations better;\nSkills in helping people find constructive ways to minimise or resolve conflict.\n\nThe course runs online over four morning sessions. Please note: Registration is only required for the first date but attending all four sessions is essential. \n\nSession 1: Mon 23 January * 09:30 – 12:00\nSession 2: Tues 24 January * 09:30 – 12:00\nSession 3: Mon 30 January * 09:30 – 12:00\nSession 4: Tues 31 January * 09:30 – 12:00\n\nOnce we have received your registration we will check that your organisation meets the criteria for this session and will be in touch with you to confirm your place and how to join the session. Spaces are available on a first come first serve basis. \nOnly 1 ticket available per organisation\, unless spaces become available. If you would like to book more than one place please contact us separately. \nContact Meg at meg.taintor@communitylandscotland.org.uk with any queries.

SUMMARY:Bought and Sold for Carbon not Gold
DESCRIPTION:Yer tea\, a gab and a ceilidh. \nNow is the time for a radical rethink of our approach to land holding in Scotland; as a Common Responsibility\, not an Individual Right. \nWe’re being marched into yet another wave of land theft: this time parcelled up and sold off for carbon credits to multinationals and billionaires. As equatorial regions become increasingly uninhabitable\, imagine living in a country whose land rights\, access to food\, and approach to hospitality is based on the concept of ‘breid\, barley bree and pentit room’\, rather than a forced emulation of Burns’ Rogues… \nJoin us for yer tea\, a bit of music\, and time to dream islands of sanity for new realities to navigate by.
