SUMMARY:Why land reform matters: The power of people and place
DESCRIPTION:As part of the celebrations to mark 100 years since the resettlement of Galson village\, Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn will host one of Community Land Scotland’s talks in the Simon Fraser Memorial series during its extended heritage festival\, Dùthchas next month. \nThe Simon Fraser Memorial series looks at the life and works of Simon Fraser\, a solicitor and pioneer of land reform in Scotland. Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn is a community landowner of the Galson Estate on the Isle of Lewis who worked closely with Simon following the community buy out in 2007. \nThey will be joined by guest speaker\, Brian Wilson. \nAs a journalist and Labour politician\, Brian has campaigned for decades on land reform; as a Minister he instigated the Community Land Unit at HIE and the Scottish Land Fund. He supported and admired the essential work done by Simon Fraser to help deliver a string of community buy-outs. In this lecture\, Brian will ask how that momentum can be regained and explain why it matters. \nRead Brian Wilson’s lecture here. \n

SUMMARY:2024 Annual General Meeting: How do we get to 10%?
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, 1 October 2024\, at 13:00 for our Annual General Meeting\, hosted on Zoom. All members and the general public are welcome to attend. \nFollowing the AGM\, we are pleased to host a special discussion designed to provide community landowners with crucial updates on the latest pathways to land ownership and available funding opportunities. \nHow do we get to 10%?\nIn 2023\, Community Land Scotland set the target of having 10% of Scotland in community ownership by 2030. However\, it has become clear that the total land in community ownership has plateaued at approximately 3%. In the second half of this webinar\, we will receive detailed updates about the tools we have to support community ownership and then engage in a discussion about whether these tools are up to the job. \nWebinar Highlights: \nIn-Depth Updates: \n* Hear important updates on the Land Reform Bill\, Community Right to Buy review\, Ownerless Property Transfer Scheme (OTPS)\, Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO)\, and the Asset Transfer Review. \n* Get the latest information on the Scottish Land Fund and our proposal for a National Community Wealth Fund. \nPanel Discussion: \n* Engage with our panel of experts who will critically examine whether these tools are up to the task. \n* Gain insights into the strengths and potential areas for improvement in the current framework. \nDon’t miss this chance to stay informed\, participate in our AGM\, and engage in meaningful discussions about the future of community land ownership. Register today to secure your spot! \n  \nDownload the agenda\, draft accounts and 2024 Members’ Report here. \n  \n \n  \n

History is not linear; we fight the same fight. We struggle because the revolution is always now.\n \nJoin us to hear stories of contemporary land resistance\, and thicken the plot together.\n \nYe’ll get yer tea and a wee bit eh music too…

SUMMARY:Pairc Trust Pairc Community Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Pairc Trust is excited to host a walk and talk in the small village of Calbost in partnership with Pairc Historical Society. The walk will be family friendly and at a leisurely pace\, with specific areas and points of interest e.g. the black house ruins\, identified and their historical significance discussed. The walk will start at the barn on the Calbost/Gravir road where there is ample parking and a possible shelter and talk if the weather is inclement. This is weather dependent and if unsuitable catering will be provided indoors. There will be an opportunity for discussions and for the Trust to engage with residents to plan the celebrations for our 10-year anniversary of community ownership of the Estate which takes place next year! \nWe will also have Hebridean Baker from Cromore joining Ravenspoint at 3pm on his book tour for the launch of his new cookbook\, ‘The Scottish Cookbook’. He will provide a talk which will include stories and songs from the island. Following on from this\, there will be a Q&A\, and he will also be signing books! \nAgenda: \n\n10:30am – 12:30pm – Walk and talk in Calbost with meeting point at the barn on the Calbost/Gravir road.\n1:30pm – Community BBQ at Ravenspoint Centre.\n3pm – Hebridean Baker Book Tour at Ravenspoint Centre including talk and Q&A.
