SUMMARY:Where We Stand - Inverness
DESCRIPTION:23 April – 30 April 2025 \nMonday – Friday * 9:00 – 17:00 \nSaturday * 11:00 – 15:00 \n  \nAn exhibition about Scotland’s community ownership journey over the last 100 years… and where we go next. \nThis exhibition originally toured across parts of Scotland in Summer 2024 in partnership with the Travelling Gallery and was seen by close to 2\,500 people. We are delighted to be able to take this back out 10 venues around Scotland in Spring / Summer 2025. \nThe exhibition acknowledges and celebrates the efforts\, ingenuity and passion of all those involved in community ownership over the last century. The exhibition shines light on the tremendous collective effort of people across Scotland working together to make a better future for themselves and the nation; empowering communities and the land they live on\, the land which they are custodians of. \nEach work is rooted in the experience and knowledge of people deeply involved in community ownership and then honed and shaped by artists embedded in those places. Each process of creation was about reciprocity\, sharing skills and collective vision. \nIt is important to contextualise these contemporary artworks within the larger land reform movement of Scotland\, so woven through the exhibition are the milestones and accomplishments of the last one hundred years\, and an invitation to look forward towards what the next one hundred years might hold. \nEverything traces back to people and place; the stories of how people live\, how they create a sense of belonging and how we live in harmony with the rest of the natural world. These artworks are about tracing the roots of this social movement to see what has flourished already\, and to wonder what blossoms are still to come. \n \n

SUMMARY:Simon Fraser Memorial Lecture 2025
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the annual Simon Fraser Memorial Lecture 2025.\nThe second annual Simon Fraser Memorial Lecture will take place in London and will be hosted by Community Land Scotland. The focus of the event will be on sharing experiences and learning between England\, Scotland and Wales about community ownership and the transformational change it can deliver. \nThis conversation comes at a particularly opportune moment. The UK Government is developing proposals for the introduction of Community Right to Buy in England through the English Devolution Bill. Previous reforms\, such as the Localism Act\, have not given communities the same power\, or had the breadth of vision\, as the Scottish equivalents. It is also working on a land use framework\, with discussion about the potential for a wider land reform agenda. \nThe Welsh Government is reviewing its approach to community assets\, where there are currently no equivalent rights\, and is considering whether to bring forward legislation and policy in support of a more ambitious community ownership agenda. A commission has been established to stimulate innovative thinking on community ownership of land and assets. \nThe facilitated discussion and debate\, chaired by John Watt of Community Land Scotland\, along with a voice of community ownership in Scotland and counterparts in England and Wales\, will equip us with a much richer understanding of the path to community power through ownership of land. \nWe are pleased to be working with colleagues at the Community Land Trust Network\, Power to Change and Cwmpas to bring you this event. We’d also like to thank the Nationwide Foundation for their support. \nThe gathering will feature a chaired panel discussion and open Q&A lasting 90 minutes\, followed by live music and a drinks reception. \n\n  \n\n  \n \nMeet the speakers:\n \nJohn Watt – Chair of Community Land ScotlandJohn has worked in the Highlands and Islands for nearly 40 years. SUMMARY:Fire Stories: We Make the Road by Walking
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating a Century of Community Land In Scotland \nThe Craigallian fire\, wisnae just any old fire\, legend has it that fire burned continuously for over 20 year. And its siren song promised a better life\, a life of socialism and freedom\, full of beauty and poetry under the wide and starry sky. \nCome sit by the fire\, bask in her warm glow. Relax\, soak her up. Listen to her crackle. Can you hear it? Join us for a relaxed afternoon of Chat\, Song\, Poetry\, Film and Performance as we share histories and stories of The Craigallian Fire\, Radical Glasgow\, Scottish Land Reformers and the Community Spirit of Easterhoose! \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \n

SUMMARY:Why land reform matters: The power of people and place
DESCRIPTION:As part of the celebrations to mark 100 years since the resettlement of Galson village\, Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn will host one of Community Land Scotland’s talks in the Simon Fraser Memorial series during its extended heritage festival\, Dùthchas next month. \nThe Simon Fraser Memorial series looks at the life and works of Simon Fraser\, a solicitor and pioneer of land reform in Scotland. Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn is a community landowner of the Galson Estate on the Isle of Lewis who worked closely with Simon following the community buy out in 2007. \nThey will be joined by guest speaker\, Brian Wilson. \nAs a journalist and Labour politician\, Brian has campaigned for decades on land reform; as a Minister he instigated the Community Land Unit at HIE and the Scottish Land Fund. He supported and admired the essential work done by Simon Fraser to help deliver a string of community buy-outs. In this lecture\, Brian will ask how that momentum can be regained and explain why it matters. \nRead Brian Wilson’s lecture here. \n

SUMMARY:Gigha Day & Simon Fraser Memorial Event
DESCRIPTION:The Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust played tribute to Simon Fraser in a full day event that celebrated the past\, present and future of the island. \nThis year’s Gigha Day not only commemorated the anniversary of island’s community buyout\, but also served as a memorial event for Simon Fraser\, a solicitor and pioneer for land reform. Simon’s wife\, Ann Fraser\, launched the festivities by raising the Gigha flag. Alongside the flag raising\, Gigha Primary buried a time capsule. All the pupils have included a letter which tells a little bit about themselves alongside what they would like to see Gigha like in 100 years. They have also included a photo of something that is important to them and want children of the future to see. \nAfter the flag raising and time capsule\, guests adjourned to the Gigha Hotel for food\, and a couple of mapping activities – the first was to create a timeline of what has happened over the last 100 years on Gigha. The second mapping activity was for people to write what they want to see Gigha like in 100 years’\ntime. \nSeveral speakers were invited to the events\, with the theme of their talks being “Community Wealth Building”. Our first speaker was Neil McInroy. Neil is an international expert on Community Wealth Building and is the global lead for Community Wealth Building at The Democracy Collaborative and is Chair of the Economic Development Association of Scotland. Our second speaker was Miriam Brett who is a Co-Director of Future Economy Scotland which is a think tank that aims to create a democratic\, sustainable\, and just economy for everyone.
