Starting the conversation ‐ Land Agents & Community Landowners

We were pleased to welcome delegates to our event in Perth on Tuesday 10th November, entitled ‘Community Land Ownership ‐ What’s it all about?‘. The event was aimed at land agents and chartered surveyors in Scotland to learn more about the growing sector of community land ownership.

Delegates represented a broad range of property consultancy, land valuation and estate agencies as well as several from Perth & Kinross Council and observers from research institutions.

Introduced and chaired by Community Land Scotland Chairman Lorne MacLeod, presentations were given from Chairman of the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, John Hutchison, covering the journey of the Isle of Eigg into community ownership and the developments which have taken place since then; from Head of Community Assets at Highlands & Islands Enterprise, Ailsa Raeburn, who provided an overview of the work of her team of advisors, and the community land process, outlined the provisions and objectives of the Scottish Land Fund, and provided a perspective on how best those present might be able to work with this emerging sector. Finally, Community Land Scotland Policy Director Peter Peacock discussed the policy, political and legal contexts surrounding community land ownership, with an update on the Community Empowerment and Land Reform Bills.

We believe that this event opened a positive dialogue between the community landowning and land agency sectors, something that we hope will grow.
