Residents of Aird, Uig on the West Side of Lewis are voting to take ownership of buildings at Gallan Head which have formerly been used by the RAF, the Ministery of Defense, and most recently by NATO. The community hope to develop the site into a dark skies location and, with the possible installation of a hydrophone, the site could also host a station to listen to whales and other local sealife. The ballot closes on Tuesday 28th July 28th and the counting will take place on Wednesday, July 29th (the count is open to the public & will take place in Committee Room 3, Council Offices, Sandwick Road, Stornoway at 10am)
